Dear Parents/Carers,
Trivia Night
We wish to thank the Trivia Night working party and Evandale Rotary Club for helping to run the Trivia Night on Friday 26 July. It was a fantastic night with lots of fun for all involved. I wish to extend a special thankyou to Doug White, Steve Plowright, Jan Van Asch and Sandra Becker for their outstanding efforts, without which the evening would not have been possible. It is such a privilege to work in partnership with such a supporting community. All funds raised from this evening will go towards developing a nature playground in the junior playground. We look forward to consulting with our community about what we should include in the new nature playground in the coming weeks.

Epilepsy Accreditation
Our school is working towards gaining our Epilepsy Awareness Accreditation. All staff will be participating in training with Epilepsy Tasmania and the SLC will be holding an Epilepsy Awareness Day on Thursday 15 August where students can wear their PJs to school and donate a gold coin (purple is the official Epilepsy fundraising colour but any coloured PJs are fine). We will also be running a competition between Barclay and Logan on the day to see who can make the longest silver coin line – what a great chance to offload all of that change! All money raised will be donated to Epilepsy Tasmania. Thank you for helping us to help our students with Epilepsy and raise awareness for their condition. You can visit the Epilepsy Tasmanian website here to get more information. https://epilepsytasmania.org.au/living-with-epilepsy/understanding-epilepsy/
EPS Instructional Model
Teachers have spent considerable time developing a consistent understanding of what good teaching looks like at Evandale Primary School because research shows that the greatest impact on student learning is the teacher. Having the best quality teachers in every school for every student is a key goal of the DoE. Here at Evandale we have an amazing team of professionals who are always looking for ways to do their best work everyday. We are pleased to share our Instructional Model with you which summarises what good teaching looks like in our classrooms. Our work over the next few years will be supporting each other to apply this to our work across all learning areas in a consistent way. This is really exciting work and we are thrilled to share this with you.
Phonics at Evandale
We are so excited to be using phonics with our younger students. Four mornings per week all of our Prep-Grade 2 students move to ability based phonics groups to work on developing a strong understanding of the sounds in words (phonemes), what they look like (graphemes) and how to write them down. These skills are vital to becoming a successful reader and writer. We regularly check on how students are tracking with their learning and it was fantastic to see how many students have moved up a level or two in their phonics groups in just 5 weeks of teaching. This evidence based program is really having big impacts on our student’s learning.
Attendance
Some families would have received a letter from me last asking for any unexplained absences to be addressed. Providing an acceptable reason for your child’s absence from school is a legal requirement as full time schooling is mandated for all school aged children in Tasmania. Returning the form with the explanations listed or calling the school to provide reasons for your child’s absences would be greatly appreciated.
Write a Book in a Day
In week 6 some of our grade 6 students will be undertaking a really big challenge – to write a book in just one day!! This project is not only great fun but also is a way to raise funds to support the Kids Cancer Project. The books that are published are also donated to chiuldren in hospitals. Watch out for some fundraising activities coming from this group.Book Week 2019
National Book Week will be held from 17-23 August and our Book Week Parade will be held on Friday 23 August at 9:00am in the GP. The theme for book week is reading is my secret power. All are invited to attend. We look forward to finding out what your child’s favourite book is through their dress up.
Satisfaction Surveys
The 2019 School Satisfaction Surveys will be open from Monday 19 August - Friday 13 September and letters will be sent home soon with the link to complete the parent survey. We really value your ideas and feedback on how you see the school is going and to seek ways that we could do things better. It is great that the DoE provides a mechansism for all members of our community to have a voice as successful schools are those where the community shares a common purpose and vision. Staff and senior students will also complete surveys during this window of time.
Zones of Regulation
We have just begun our journey with using the Zones of Regulation which is a curriculum designed to foster self-regulation and emotional control. This program teaches us that we can identify our feelings as being in one of four different zones.
- Blue zone is the rest area where you might be feeling tired, sick, bored, lethargic or sad.
- Green zone is the go area where you may be feeling happy, calm, focused and ready to learn.
- Yellow zone is slow area where you might feel some loss of control and feel frustrated, worried, silly/wiggly or excited.
- Red zone is where you may be angry, terrified or out of control.
Everyone finds themselves in all of these zones from time to time but most of us prefer to be in the green zone for most of the time. The Zones of Regulation is a great program that helps us to teach students to recognise their own feelings and zones, to understand what triggers them to get out of the green zone and what tools they could use that will help them get back to the green zone. This is really similar to the green and red road analogy used in MyTern. The early work that students have completed in the Zones is really exciting and we look forward to sharing our work with you more over the coming months.

Grade 5-6
Last term was an exciting term of learning for our class. Students have had a visit from the Tornadoes where they enjoyed learning skills and had fun during work shops that Mrs Lydon coordinated.
Our clever class of leaders taught the grade 3s some netball.
In our focus reading groups each morning students have been involved in reciprocal reading groups and reading theatre.
In Science we have been looking at animals and how they adapt. Students created a poster and presented an oral presentation to class.

What a fabulous bunch of bookworms we have at Evandale Primary! Well done to all the students who have clocked up so many nights of reading.

What is your role on the School Association and how long have you been on the SA? |
I have been on the School Association since the beginning of this year. I am a parent representative and I also act as a liaison between Parents and Friends and the School Association. |
Why did you join the SA? |
My eldest child started kinder this year and I joined the School Association for two main reasons: an interest in understanding how schools work, and a desire to contribute something to this wonderful school.
|
What are the main things that you hope to do as a member of the SA this year or that you have done in the past? |
I’m hoping my background in public policy may prove useful when we develop or review the school’s policies. I am also interested in helping the school review its performance, strategic direction and values for the benefit of all students and teachers. |
What do you love most about Evandale Primary School? |
I admire the school’s warm and friendly atmosphere, along with its beautiful grounds and that the walls and hallways are adorned with students’ artwork. Launching into Learning, my daughter starting kinder and my membership of the School Association have all allowed me to meet many lovely people from the school community, which has helped me feel a part of Evandale, a town I only moved to in 2015. |
What is something unusual or surprising about you that others may not know about you?
|
I ‘migrated’ to Tasmania from Melbourne in 2012 because it was getting too hot and dry in Melbourne to grow my own fruit and veggies. Following the birth of both my children at the Launceston General Hospital, I am also now a community representative on the Consumer and Community Engagement Council at the hospital. |
Where did you go to school and what is your best memory of your school years?
|
I went to St Anne’s Primary and then to Balwyn High School, both in Victoria. My best memories of school are spending time with friends, but also the heroic efforts of those teachers who made education interesting and engaging and something worth pursuing. |
We hope that everone had a great school holiday break! During the holidays P&F held a Bunnings BBQ at Kings Meadows and made a profit of just over $600. We also catered for a small function at Hangar 17 which added more funds to our kitty. A BIG thank you to all parents and friends who helped out with these functions. If you are interested in volunteering in the future please contact Laura Dixon on 0401 842 966.
The Uniform Shop will be open every Wednesday morning until the end of Term 2. Opening times are from 8.40 – 9.00am.
Kinder Enrolments 2020
Children born in 2015 turning 5 in 2020 are welcome to join us at Evandale Primary School for Kindergarten. Enrolment forms are now available at the school office. We invite families to contact the school if you would like to tour or discuss your child’s enrolment.
Please phone 6391 8261 to make an appointment.
